Time away and finances

Time away and finances

Financial well-being

From doctor visits to treatments to medications, cancer care can be costly. In addition to the financial protection provided through your medical coverage, you have specific benefits through Wolters Kluwer that can help you focus on your health rather than the cost of your care.

Tax saving accounts

The Health Savings Account (HSA) and Health Care Flexible Spending Account (HCFSA) allow you to save and pay for health care expenses on a pre-tax basis — saving you money on eligible expenses. You may be eligible for one or both tax-advantaged accounts to help you cover expenses related to cancer treatment.

Legal assistance

If you enrolled in the MetLife Legal Plans (a voluntary benefit you can enroll in during Annual Enrollment), it provides you with covered legal services from experienced attorneys on many legal matters, including wills, living trusts, estate planning, money matters and more.

If you aren’t enrolled in MetLife Legal Plans, you can take advantage of legal consultation and will preparation services through the Employee Assistance Program (company ID WKEAP).

Financial counseling

Available for free through the Employee Assistance Program, financial coaches can help you manage a change in your finances and prepare for a financially secure future.

Voluntary benefits

Voluntary benefits are available to enroll in during Annual Enrollment and can supplement your medical coverage and provide additional peace of mind. If you are navigating a cancer care journey, these benefits can help cover medical and everyday living expenses, including:

  • Critical Illness Insurance: Offers a lump-sum payment upon diagnosis of a serious illness that can be used for medical expenses, lost income or other financial needs.
  • Hospital Indemnity Plan: Provides a fixed cash benefit for each day you are hospitalized due to a covered illness that can help cover out-of-pocket expenses like deductibles, copays and everyday living costs.

Designate beneficiaries

As part of planning for your financial well-being, it's important to ensure your beneficiary designations are current. This includes:

  • 401(k) and Health Savings Account (HSA): Log on to your Fidelity account at www.netbenefits.com to review or update your beneficiaries.
  • Insurance coverage: Log on to www.yourbenefitsresources.com to confirm your life and other insurance beneficiary information.

Taking this proactive step can offer peace of mind, knowing that your assets will be distributed according to your wishes - providing support to those you care about most.

Road to recovery program

Offered through the American Cancer Society, this program provides transportation to and from treatment for people with cancer who do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves.

Time away

If you need to be away from work to take care of yourself or a family member, you have options to take paid and unpaid time off so you can take care of what matters most.

Talk with you manager about any accommodations you may need, such as time away, breaks throughout the day and options for remote/flexible work so you have the flexibility you need to keep up with your care.

To learn more about your time away options, please refer to the leave of absence benefits on Workday Help. If you have questions, please or create a case in Workday.

Disability benefits

Disability coverage allows you to take additional time off to care for your own personal illness.

  • Short-Term Disability provides graduated salary continuation for up to 26 weeks for eligible employees to focus on getting well.
  • If you are unable to return to work following 26 weeks of STD benefits, Long-Term Disability provides 60% of your average gross monthly earnings, up to a maximum monthly limit.

Family Medical Leave of Absence (FMLA)

FMLA provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave over a 12-month period to care for a family member with a serious health condition or to deal with your own serious health condition.

Caregiver Leave

If you’re caring for a family member, this option gives you flexibility while allowing you to focus on what’s important — being there for your loved one. This leave provides up to one week of leave paid at 100% of your regular salary.

Personal Leave

Personal Leave provides unpaid time off to care for yourself and/or your family. This leave includes up to 30 days of unpaid leave during a rolling 12-month period.

Vacation Time

Vacation Time provides additional paid time off to care for yourself or your loved one. Available Vacation Time can also be used to provide you with pay when used during the unpaid waiting period prior to Short-Term Disability, if Sick Time is not available to cover the full duration.

Sick Time

Sick Time gives you paid time away from work if you are dealing with illness or a health condition. Amongst other uses, you can also use this time if you are caring for your spouse, domestic partner, children and/or parents (your local Sick Time laws may provide a broader definition of who is covered).

Depending on where you live, you are entitled to a certain amount of Sick Time per year that is granted on January 1 (during your first year of employment, it’s granted on your first day). To see your Sick Time entitlement, please refer to the Sick Time policy on the Workday Help.
